Did you know there is a hormone that is responsible for our happiness? OK, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but serotonin is literally called “the happy hormone,” because it plays such a large role in our happiness. That feeling when jamming to your favorite song in the car? That’s serotonin working. Serotonin plays a key role in making these feelings possible. It profoundly impacts our mood, sleep, and even digestion. Like dopamine, it’s also a neurotransmitter and shares a lot in common with its’ close cousin. Keep reading to learn more about why else they call serotonin the happy chemical.

What is Serotonin?

Serotonin is a chemical our brains produce that acts as a neurotransmitter. It is crucial for sending messages between nerve cells, influencing a wide array of psychological and physical functions. Known primarily for stabilizing mood, it also regulates sleep, appetite, and digestion. Understanding serotonin’s role helps us appreciate its importance in maintaining emotional and physical health.

Why is Serotonin Important?

Serotonin levels are critical for mood balance. When you have insufficient amounts, it can cause or increase depression and anxiety. Robust levels, on the other hand, enhance emotional well-being, contributing to feelings of happiness and reduced anxiety. If you have ever heard of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs), you may already know all about serotonin production. SSRIs are believed to increase the amount of serotonin produced in the brain, thus alleviating depressive symptoms. It’s not just about feeling good, though. Getting enough serotonin means more regular sleep cycles, restorative sleep, and effectively digesting food. Serotonin is also responsible for wound healing because it is largely stored in our platelets in the blood. Most importantly, it controls the body’s sexual functions – both fun and function.

Where is Serotonin Produced?

Surprisingly, while serotonin impacts brain function, approximately 95% of it is produced in the gastrointestinal tract. This comes as a surprise to many, but this is also one of the reasons you often hear the term “gut brain.” This production emphasizes the link between gut health and mental health, shedding light on why a “gut feeling” can sometimes be a powerful indicator of emotional states.

How to Boost Your Serotonin Levels

So how can you boost your happy hormone, serotonin? Enhancing serotonin levels can be achieved through several methods, including conventional medications and natural alternatives. Talk to your doctor to see the best approach, as it could be a combination of conventional and alternative interventions:

Conventional Medication

SSRIs are most commonly prescribed for serotonin based depression. They build serotonin levels in the brain by blocking reabsorption of the chemical, so more of it remains active. That’s what it means when we say “reuptake,” because it prevents your body from “taking back,” the serotonin it just created. The most common SSRIs include fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft), although there are several others. As a word of caution, you shouldn’t use other medications or supplements without first talking with your doctor. This can be dangerous and may put you at risk of a condition called serotonin syndrome.

Diet

Incorporating foods rich in tryptophan, an amino acid that your body converts into serotonin, is highly effective. Since our body cannot produce tryptophan, it’s important to get it in our diet. Foods including turkey, eggs, cheese, pineapples, tofu, salmon, and nuts, are rich in tryptophan.

Sunlight

Similar to dopamine, spending time in sunlight can increase the number of serotonin receptors and boost your mood. Try to get at least 30 minutes of sunlight daily and if you suffer from seasonal affective disorder (S.A.D.), consider a sun lamp to support vitamin D production.

Herbs and supplements

St. John’s Wort is one of the most effective herbs/supplements for serotonin based depression. However, it’s quite powerful and if you are taking any kind of SSRIs or other drugs with a small working range, I don’t recommend it. It’s an unnecessary risk. SAM-e is another supplement that has been effective for serotonin production, but most cases are anecdotal and it lacks research. Tryptophan, the pre-cursor to serotonin is another supplement option worth exploring if other options aren’t effective. As mentioned in the medication section, you shouldn’t use other medications or supplements without first talking with your doctor or health care provider. This can be dangerous if not managed appropriately.

Exercise

Regular physical activity is not only good for physical health but also boosts serotonin. Activities like walking, cycling, or yoga are particularly beneficial. This has been shown to increase the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, thus enhancing those happy feelings. It’s also a good boost for self-confidence.

Mindfulness and meditation

Mindfulness and meditation practices have also been shown to increase serotonin levels, improving mood and reducing stress.

Enhancing serotonin – the happy hormone

  • Consistent sleep patterns: Maintaining a regular sleep schedule every day helps regulate your body’s natural rhythms, supporting serotonin production.
  • Social interactions: Engaging with friends and family can improve your mood and boost serotonin levels.
  • Hobbies: Things like spending time in nature, listening to your fave music, and writing can also give you that extra internal pump of serotonin.
