We are already rounding the corner to February and along with that, week 4 of our Wellspiration 5-week series on managing stress, for folks in tech. Specifically, we are revisiting Mind-Body Techniques for Stress Reduction. While our focus is the tech industry, these techniques apply to anyone. Keep reading and hopefully you will leave a little less stressed, or at least a bit more informed, about how to use mind-body techniques for stress reduction.
Understanding the mind-body connection
If you read our September blog post about the “Mind Body Connection for Holisitic Healing,” you probably already know the value of combining mental and physical practices to reduce stress and enhance overall well-being. The link between the mind and the body is pivotal in managing stress. Psychological stress manifests physically, influencing everything from our heart rate to how we poop. Research in psychosomatic medicine has consistently shown that managing mental stress can lead to positive physical health outcomes. For example, a 2023 study showed that stress had a major impact on the development and obesity in children. This interplay highlights the need for holistic stress management approaches, where both mental and physical health are addressed.
The power of mindfulness and meditation
We have talked about mindfulness in this series and before in Wellspiration, but it bears repeating over and over. In fact, it wouldn’t be an article about mind-body techniques for stress reduction, without mindfulness and meditation. The studies keep coming about the value of mindfulness practices for reducing stress. Mindfulness and meditation have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve mental health. These practices, focusing on present-moment awareness and non-judgmental observation, help in significantly lowering stress levels. Not only can they reduce stress, these techniques have been shown to reverse adverse health outcomes. There is a reason the phrase “mind over matter,” exists!
Deep breathing exercises: A simple yet effective tool
Breathing sounds easy, right? I mean we do it without thinking, right? Yes and no. Many of us breathe shallowly and don’t truly intake all the oxygen we could, which keeps us from from feeling our absolute best. Want a quick trick for figuring out how deeply you breathe? Lay on the floor and put a book on your belly. If the book rises and falls while you breathe, congratulations! You are a naturally deep breather. If your chest moves up and down instead, you could be feeling so much more refreshed. Try breathing and making the book on your belly move up and down. What do you notice? How does your body feel different? Incidentally, while you were doing this exercise, you were mindfully breathing. Look at you!
Deep breathing exercises are a quick method to trigger the body’s relaxation response. Scientific studies have shown how deep breathing positively impacts the nervous system, thereby reducing symptoms related to stress and improving overall relaxation. Deep breathing works because it activates the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the system that tells the body that we are safe and out of danger, allowing the body to relax and turning off the fight or flight response (sympathetic nervous system).
Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) and biofeedback
PMR is another great mind-body techniques for stress reduction we haven’t talked about on Wellspiration before. PMR involves tensing and relaxing different muscle groups and has been shown to reduce physical tension and associated mental stress. Research in the Journal of Clinical Nursing also found significant stress and anxiety reduction using PMR among cancer patients.
Biofeedback, meanwhile, uses electronic monitoring to convey information about physiological processes, such as heart rate and muscle tension, helping individuals gain more control over their stress responses. Do you have an Apple watch or an Oura ring? If so, you are already getting a type of biofeedback. Studies [1] [2] in applied psychophysiology and biofeedback show that biofeedback, especially when combined with other relaxation techniques, can significantly improve symptoms of stress and anxiety.
The Benefits of Tai Chi and Qigong
You may not be familiar with Tai Chi and Qigong, but these are ancient mind-body techniques for stress reduction, even if they didn’t start that way. Tai Chi and Qigong are mind-body practices that blend physical movement, meditation, and controlled breathing. They keep you “present” while focusing on specific movements and postures, in coordination with your breath. Think of these as the Chinese practices comparable to Indian yogic practices.
These ancient practices have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety while improving overall physical health and balance. A study published in the Psychiatric Clinics of North America highlights the positive effects of Tai Chi and Qigong on psychological well-being, illustrating their role in stress management. A similar meta study was published in the journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, showing Qigong to be effective for reducing stress and improving symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Incorporating Mind-Body Techniques into Daily Life
For those in high-pressure tech jobs, integrating mind-body techniques for stress reduction into a daily routine can be both simple and effective. Practices like mindfulness, deep breathing, and even short sessions of Tai Chi can be easily included in a busy schedule. Think of it as a different kind of “joy snack.” These days, you can find multiple digital tools and apps to help you along the way. Leverage anything from watches, jewelry, and app-based structured programs, to help maintain consistency in these practices.
Mind-body techniques offer more than just stress reduction; they are a pathway to a more balanced, healthy life. In today’s high-stress, tech-driven world, adopting these practices is essential for maintaining both mental clarity and physical health.
