For folks new to coaching in general, one of the most common questions is “is coaching therapy?. The thing about good coaches is that they know how to deeply listen and ask compelling questions. This can often feel like therapy because it’s rare to feel truly listened to and cared for. Coaching puts clients at the center of each session. Similar to therapy, you have an opportunity to air grievances and talk through heavy and emotional things. Very much like you would a therapist, but that is where the similarity usually ends. Most importantly, therapists carry licenses while coaches carry certifications. Ideally, clients are working with therapists and coaches for optimal benefit.

Why Coaching is Different from Therapy

Therapy often looks at root cause of behaviors and the past history of emotional burdens. Whereas, coaching helps clients look forward. Coaches support their clients create actionable plans to move toward the future. Coaching helps clients get unstuck and break free from old limiting beliefs that may be holding them back. Coaches will often work with you to understand your values and then live in integrity with those values. Some coaches help you create action plans for achieving future goals and then help you stay accountable to your goals. Coaches are not the “sage on the stage,” but rather the “guide on the side,” cheering you on and celebrating every win, with you. Ideally, you work with therapists for many years and even a lifetime, where coaches are shorter durations, depending on the specific need.

Shopping for a Coach or Therapist

Coaching comes in all different forms. Coaches exist for everything, including how to live a more joyful life, how to run a business, or how to micro dose psilocybin mushrooms. You are likely already familiar with sport coaches and this is no different. Similar to finding a coach for every sport, you can find coaches for every single thing you may want to improve or explore in your life. Since they come in all different shapes, sizes and expertises, it makes it easier to find the coach to support the specific goals you are trying to achieve. Similar to how you would find therapists with specific skills, you can do the same with coaching.
