I hate burying the lede, so did you know that the gut is the most important ecosystem on the planet for humans? We can’t even see it, but it has more to do with our health and well-being, than any other single thing. Comprised of trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, we are more microorganism than human, in many ways. Our gut health influences our overall health, influencing digestion, immunity, and even our mental health, in ways we are only beginning to understand. Gut health is literally the core connection to everything in our body. In our 4 part gut series, we are going to get nerdy on the gut. Hopefully, we will reinforce some things you may already know, share some of the latest gut research, and give you ways to care for yourself and your trillions of friends.
Gut…oh good God…what is it good for
So when we talk about the gut, what do we even mean? You can think of the gut as where the outside meets the inside. Also known as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, it’s a complex system starting at the mouth and ending at the anus. In between, it traverses the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, and finally ending at the colon and anus. I like to think of it as the tunnel through which your food travels. Kinda like how food travels from the Chipotle drive through, until it leaves as liquid burrito. Advanced warning…there will be bad poop jokes throughout the series. The gut’s primary role is digestion and absorption of food, however it’s so much bigger. It’s a complex process, but I’m not a doctor, so we will keep it high-level.
A little bit of history repeating…
Beyond digestive functions, the gut plays a critical role in our overall health. In fact, there are studies going back to the 1600’s linking behavior to the digestive system. Hippocrates, the Father of modern medicine, coined the phrase “let food be thy medicine,” and it wasn’t for nothing. He even experimented with milk to treat certain conditions as early as 400 BCE. Even if we couldn’t show exactly how, early scientists realized how the community of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms, affected the immune system. This research fell out of favor in the 20th century, but gained huge momentum again in the 21st century, thankfully. Even 400 years ago, we could clearly see the core connection between our well-being and gut health.
Dissecting digestion a bit more, we know the gut microbiome is essential for metabolizing nutrients, protecting against pathogens, and even influencing mental health, via the gut-brain axis. This is a communication network linking the gut and the brain, and why the gut health affects our mental health. However, it’s even bigger than that. Gut health is pivotal for maintaining the body’s homeostasis and resilience against diseases, but that comes with challenges. Everything from diet, lifestyle, stress, and antibiotics, impact its’ ability to function effectively. Due to the sheer amount of roles our gut microbiome plays, it’s integral to our health and vitality. I’m devoting an entire post in our series to this topic, so don’t worry if you’re hungry for more. See what I did there?
Diet versus the gut
What we eat has profound implications for the health and diversity of our gut microbiome. You have likely heard that a balanced diet rich in fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains supports the growth of beneficial bacteria, which in turn enhances gut health and function. But, wait! There’s more! Fermented foods, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi, are rich in probiotics that replenish and nourish our gut flora. Conversely, a diet predominated by processed foods, sugar, and bad fats can lead to dysbiosis, and an imbalance in the gut microbiota. This imbalance is linked to numerous health issues, including inflammatory bowel diseases, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, but we will get to more on that later. This is further evidence to why gut health is the core connection to everything in our lives.
Common gut health issues
Gut dysbiosis shows up in multiple ways. From borborygmus to something more major like chronic cramping, constipation and diarrhea, we often brush off as normal. Infrequently, they may just mean you went to Chipotle for lunch. However, when these things are chronic, they may be symptoms of a larger issue in the gut microbiome. Conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and intestinal impermeability (AKA leaky gut), have profound effects on health. Understanding these conditions, their symptoms, and when to seek medical advice are crucial for early intervention and management.
Optimizing gut health
Through the rest of the series I’ll delve deeper into optimizing gut health, speaking to dietary and lifestyle factors. We’ll talk about how simple things like prebiotics, probiotics, and essential nutrients can nourish a healthier gut microbiome. This includes how to feed the good bacteria and reduce the bad bacteria. We’ll cover the impact of lifestyle, including stress management, sleep, exercise, and minimizing exposure to environmental toxins, as well.
Gut health: The core connection – Further exploration
For those of us highly ambitious folks in the group, we’ll also explore advanced strategies for gut health. This includes the influence of the hygiene hypothesis, the impact of nature, and the growing space of personalized nutrition. I will even introduce how herbs have been used to help people heal from leaky gut and other major dysbiosis. My goal is to provide a comprehensive guide on supporting gut health across different life stages. Keeping in mind, our microbiome’s needs evolve as we age and we are all unique.
Practical strategies for gut health
All this information is great, but it’s not really useful without actionable steps, but don’t worry. We got you! I’ll wrap up the series with practical advice on implementing common sense gut health practices into daily life. From building a gut-friendly meal plan, to navigating gut health on a budget, there will be something for everyone. As always, I’m committed to offering actionable insights for improving digestive health and, by extension, overall well-being. After all, happy gut bugs make for happy humans.
