Hey there, fellow food enthusiasts! Are food troubles bugging you? We’ve all had those moments where our stomachs or skin start throwing a tantrum after a meal. But before you write off that beloved bowl of ice cream or those crispy nachos, let’s talk about something essential – food allergies and intolerances. We’ll revisit the differences between the two, various methods to identify them, and how to treat them. So, grab a cuppa something nourishing, and let’s dive in!

Last week’s blog post delved into the nitty-gritty of food allergies and intolerances. If you missed it, check it out here.

Understanding Food Troubles: Allergies vs. Intolerances

Food allergies and intolerances can be pesky problems to deal with, but they’re different critters altogether. Here’s a quick recap:

  • Food Allergies: These are immune system responses triggered by certain foods. Symptoms can range from mild hives to life-threatening anaphylaxis. Think of it as your immune system’s way of saying, “Hey, this is not my jam!”
  • Food Intolerances: These are less severe and usually involve the digestive system. Lactose intolerance, for instance, happens when your gut can’t handle dairy, leading to gas, bloating, and more. It’s like your tummy saying, “I’m not a fan of this.”

Now that we’ve got the basics down, let’s explore how to spot and manage these culinary quirks.

Identifying and Treating Food Allergies: The Scoop

So, you suspect you might be in the allergy club? Fear not! Here are some steps to figure it out:

  1. Keep a Food Diary: Note what you eat and how you feel afterward. Patterns might emerge, helping you pinpoint problematic foods. Allergic reactions happen quickly and usually subside within a few hours, at most.
  2. Consult an Allergist: A specialist can perform tests like skin prick tests or blood tests to identify specific allergens. Food allergy tests only test for actual IgE allergies, so these won’t pickup intolerances.
  3. Elimination Diet: This is the GOLD standard for identifying allergies and intolerances. Even in 2023, there is no test as accurate and reliable as an elimination diet. Here, you temporarily eliminate suspected allergens from your diet and reintroduce them one by one. This can help confirm triggers and you will learn more about your body than you ever imagined.
  4. Epinephrine: For severe allergies, carry an epinephrine auto-injector, just in case. These require a prescription in the US but are usually covered by insurance. This is your worst-case-scenario situation.

Dealing with Food Intolerances: Tummy Troubles No More!

Intolerances can be a bit trickier to detect since they usually involve delayed reactions. Here’s how to handle them:

  1. Start with the Basics: Common intolerances include lactose, gluten, and FODMAPs. Begin by cutting these out and see if your symptoms improve.
  2. Consult your Poop: Yup, we said it. Did you know poop has many things to say? It can tell you if you are getting enough fiber, water and even if you are digesting food properly. Don’t be afraid to take a look and keep track.
  3. Another Food Diary: Food diaries are ideal partners to elimination diets. Track your food, mood, and poop to see where things may charge you rent. Unlike allergic (IgE) reactions, intolerances can show up 2-3 days later and a diary can help you track back.
  4. Consult a Registered Dietician (RD):  A RD can help create a customized eating plan to identify food intolerances.
  5. Probiotics: Some folks find relief from digestive woes with probiotics. These little helpers can rebalance your gut flora.
  6. Prebiotics: Don’t forget the snacks for all your good bacteria. Things like Jerusalem artichokes, garlic, almonds and beans are great prebiotics that will keep the good bugs in your belly, happy.
  7. Be Patient: Managing intolerances may take time. Stick to your plan and monitor your progress.

Is food really bugging me, though?

We get it, this stuff is hard AF. Here are a few things to look for that may never have even occurred to you. Keep in mind, these things happen over time, so a food diary is critical to spot patterns.

  1. Congestion: This is sneaky and may be more indicative of a mild allergy. For example, after you eat dairy, do you clear your throat a lot or get lots of phlegm? You may have an intolerance to casein, rather than the common lactose intolerance.
  2. Skin Deep: Check for dry or red patches after eating trigger foods. How about that red ring around your lips? Clown lips are a definite indicator something is awry.
  3. Check Those Gums: Do you get unexplained canker sores in your mouth after eating something? That could be a food intolerance
  4. Flex Those Joints: Joint pain is a sure sign of inflammation but did you know food is a secret culprit? That’s right, those tomatoes may be quietly kicking your ass.
  5. This Brain Feels Foggy: Are words constantly at the tip of your tongue? You may have brain fog. Unfortunately it could be that lunch time ramen causing you the issues.
  6. I Can’t Stay Awake: When your body is trying to fight an invader, it will put your body asleep to focus energy on immune functions. This could be why you feel sleepy after certain meals.
  7. Muskrats in the Shower: When you find way more hair in the bottom of your shower than usual, it’s worth exploring what’s happening. For people with autoimmune disease, this is a common symptom that can be exacerbated by food.
