Ever had those moments when you can’t recall a particular word, forgot why you walked into a room, or even complete a simple task? If you’ve been nodding your head, you might be experiencing the enigmatic phenomenon known as “brain fog.” In this article, we’re going to delve into the fog, dispel some myths, and provide actionable strategies to regain your mental clarity.

What are we talking about again?

So, what exactly is brain fog? It’s that mysterious state of mind where you feel like your cognitive function has taken a vacation without asking for your permission. It’s like trying to think through a thick cloud – everything becomes a bit hazy, and you’re left feeling mentally stuck.

When the fog rolls in, and we aren’t talking about Karl

Brain fog can manifest in various ways, and it’s a unique experience for each individual. Some may find it difficult to concentrate on tasks or conversations, while others might struggle with memory recall. Things that used to come easy may suddenly be a bit more challenging. From remembering tasks from your last meeting to the groceries you need to pick up after work, things don’t come as easily as before. It can also show up as mental fatigue, slow thinking, or even a sense of disconnection from reality. You’re not alone if you’ve ever tried to read a page in a book only to realize you’ve been staring at the words for five minutes without absorbing a thing. I’m in the “let’s read this sentence 10 times,” club, myself.

What causes brain fog

Unfortunately, there is not one clear cause for brain fog. It’s one of those things called a non-specific symptom, which means it’s not unique to any particular condition, making it a bigger mystery. While it can be frustratingly elusive, science has shed some light on its origins. Some common culprits include:

Stress

The brain doesn’t function well under chronic stress, and it can lead to cognitive impairment. There are reams of research papers on this but you likely have experienced it directly. Unfortunately, prolonged periods of extreme stress can worsen brain fog or other cognitive functions.

Poor Sleep

Insufficient or poor-quality sleep is a well-known brain fog inducer. Think of the last time you had to perform after a poor night’s sleep. How did you fare? Similar to stress, there is a large body of evidence on impact of poor sleep on cognitive function, hence causing the familiar brain fog.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Back in 2021, there was a large meta study done on the impact of low B12. It showed that inadequate intake of essential nutrients like B12 negatively affected brain function. B12 isn’t the only suspect, though. Magnesium can also be critical to a happy and healthy brain.

Autoimmune Diseases

Conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or multiple sclerosis can contribute to brain fog. For anyone who has been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease or struggles with hypothyroidism, chances are you recognize when your levels are too high, because the fog rolls in.

Chronic Illness

Any long-term health issue can take a toll on cognitive function. Chronic fatigue syndrome is one of the primary culprits that comes to mind for folks struggling with brain fog.

Medications

Some drugs may have cognitive side effects that show up as brain fog. For folks undergoing chemotherapy, it’s so common, it has earned the name “chemo brain,” but it’s not the only pharmaceutical perpetrator. Improperly managed dosing of hormones such as birth control or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) could also be a sneaky cause for your brain fog. Antidepressants and SSRIs have also been shown to cause brain fog in individuals, so a personal inventory or chat with your doctor may be just what you need.

Inflammation

Chronic inflammation in the body can also affect the brain’s performance. This is the worst kind of inflammation because it can lead to further neural degenerative disease, so if you have been suffering from brain fog for an extended period of time, it’s worth talking to your doctor.

Strategies to regain clarity

The good news is that brain fog doesn’t have to be a permanent foggy companion. Modifiable lifestyle factors have proven to be incredibly powerful in combatting brain fog. Here are some strategies to clear the air:

Stress Management

Practice stress reduction techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga. Identify the big stressors in your life and see how you may be able to reduce or eliminate them.

Prioritize Sleep

Make sleep a non-negotiable part of your daily routine. Create routines and habits around good sleep hygiene. Sleep is when the dishwasher in our brain runs, so it’s critical to give it time to rinse out all the plaque and free radicals.

Nutrient-Rich Diet

Opt for a diet rich in vitamins and minerals with lots of of colorful fruits and vegetables. Food high in antioxidants like berries and cruciferous vegetables are literal brain food that can help reduce inflammation and supercharge the brain.

Exercise

Regular physical activity boosts blood flow to the brain and helps improve cognition. After all, sitting is the new smoking, so keeping that blood pumping is paramount.

Mindfulness

Engage in activities that enhance mental clarity, such as puzzles or brain-training games. Make time for fun and joy, which also helps reduce stress.

Medication Review

Consult with your healthcare provider if you suspect medication side effects or take some time to check out the side effects for your current medications. You can even keep a symptom journal to see if you notice patterns when taking any medications.

Inflammation Control

If you have an autoimmune condition, work with your healthcare team to manage inflammation. Managing inflammation helps reduce brain fog and improve overall physical wellbeing, so it’s another powerful twofer.

Clearing the fog

You’re not alone in this battle against brain fog. It can be a frustrating and bewildering experience, but there’s hope. By taking proactive steps to address the root causes and implementing lifestyle changes, you can lift the fog and regain mental clarity. Remember, your journey to clarity is unique, and progress may take time, but it’s absolutely achievable.
