It’s week 3 of our hormone series. Remember the last time you finished an intense workout? My bet is you felt pretty good and quite accomplished. Maybe you even finished and were vibrating with positive energy. This feel-good sensation is largely thanks to endorphins, our body’s natural pain reliever and mood elevator. However, what exactly are endorphins, and why are they so vital for our well-being? This week, I’m talking about endorphins. The role they play in beating stress and how they help reduce pain.
Why endorphins are important
Endorphins are peptides that help relieve pain and induce feelings of pleasure or euphoria. They are released by your body in times of stress or pain and act like analgesics. They bind to the brain’s opiate receptors, they reduce our perception of pain and can lead to feelings of happiness, joy, and even euphoria. This makes them an essential part of our body’s ability to handle stress and discomfort.

Where endorphins are produced
Endorphins are produced in the central nervous system, hypothalamus, and the pituitary gland. During periods of stress or pain, your body responds by releasing these peptides. This not only helps mask the discomfort but also promotes a sense of well-being. They are sometimes referred to as “endogenous morphine,” because we produce them ourselves and they function a bit like morphine, in reducing our perception of pain.
How to boost your endorphin levels
You know how when you toss a baby in the air and they laugh? This is due to the endorphins being released in their brains. Most of us probably aren’t getting tossed in the air, but lucky for us, there are several ways to boost your endorphin levels naturally and beat stress. Check them out:
Exercise
Probably the most common and well known reason for endorphins. Whether it be a runner’s high, dance battle, or epic gardening session, endorphins are helping. Regular physical activity increases endorphin production. The type of exercise doesn’t matter, and as little as 30 minutes has been shown to be very effective in increasing endorphins.
Laughter
There’s a reason the phrase “laughter is the best medicine,” exists, and it’s true when it comes to endorphins! Enjoying a good laugh stimulates endorphin release, improving your mood and can also reduce rising cortisol levels.
Healthy Eating
Certain foods like spicy dishes can trigger endorphin release, as well. Likewise, dark chocolate is not only delicious but also boosts endorphins. Plus, with something like dark chocolate, you get all the benefits of theobromine. Yumm….theobromine!
Socializing
Socializing is another way to naturally boost those magic chemicals. Positive social interactions can enhance your endorphin levels, so spending time with friends and loved ones can be beneficial. Toss in some laughter and dark chocolate, and now it’s a party!
Sex
Sex is another endorphin boosting activity. This is much more complex because it can also release dopamine, serotonin, AND oxytocin. However, this a great way to boost health and endorphins. I mean, why wouldn’t we want to do it for the science!
Volunteering
Helping others gives a sense of reward and triggers endorphin production, enhancing your mood and promoting a sense of connection. This is probably why it feels so good after giving back. What a wonderful and brilliant way our body promotes community, when you really think about it. We are literally built to help others.
Beat stress with endorphins
These are just a few rewarding ways to significantly boost your endorphin levels. Even better, you don’t need money, subscriptions or any special tools to enjoy a happier, healthier life.
